Summary

The boy from the beach awakes in La Croix’s hut and immediately “asks” three things when he discovers that he still lacks the strength to stand, “Who…where…ow!” La Croix decides to reask these questions of the boy, whose name is finally revealed as Codi after some brief confusion.

La Croix offers Codi some kind of healing brew, and Codi immediately finishes. La Croix, frustrated after Codi gave his name instead of ”who he is” moves on to “where are you from.” Codi cannot remember, but learns that he is currently on Tiki Island. eager for excitement, Codi tries to leave, but La Croix stops him until she gives him a mysterious concoction for emergencies and answers that she sees a lot of “ow” in Codi’s future. Then the pair leave the hut.

A roughly twelve-year-old boy (Codi) washes up on the shores of Tiki Island in the night. He is wrapped in seaweed, bruised, and basically looks near death. The only thing that stands out from his dull blue skin is a hypnotic marking not unlike a tattoo that twists around without sense and remains warm to the touch. Luckily, Lady LaCroix’s boxen, Mageni, finds the boy and carries him toward LaCroix’s hut.

Mr. Woo’s haughty employee, Veronica, has been chosen to descend into Dr. Pendleton’s laboratory to check on the progress of his many projects.  Without the knowledge of her boss, she asks after the ‘mysterious project’ she has heard allusions to.  Pendleton hesitates to show her, but gives in and leads her towards the back room.

It is night time on Tiki Island and Kino and Poompla are creeping through the forest, discussing such things as the stars and the tale of Anan.  When a device of Kino’s invention flashes bright red, they jump into action.  They can faintly hear the sound of one of Woo’s flying machines rushing towards them.  When the light changes to purple, Kino dashes off in hopes of changing its course, and Poompla hurries to his position.  Kino uses a captive group of Mozo’s to sway the metal monster and it comes barrelling towards Poompla.  Poompla chops at the rope lever and at the last moment two giant beams of wood fly into the air.  In between them is a thickly woven mesh – Arachnidite web.  Woo’s contraption has no time to react, and collides head long with the web.  For a few moments the net stretches forward and the ground shifting with the immense pull of the machine.  To Poompla’s relief the web holds strong, and the flying machine is brought to a stand still.

The Chief of Tiki Village is teaching his warriors a valuable lesson: that superior strength is not all that a warrior requires. As he is leaving the practice grounds, he is met by Luzu the shopkeeper. Luzu is concerned about the future of Tiki Village. For some time, Woo had been dropping pamphlets from the sky, inciting the villagers to move to Wootropolis. His wife is with child, and he voices his concerns over the possibility of a war between Woo and the village. The Chief is unable to quiet Luzu’s worries, and not long after he departs another visitor arrives. It is Toben, another merchant, and he brings news of the whispers in Tiki Village. He says that most of the villagers ignore the pamphlets from Woo, but each day more people become curious and read them. The Chief asks Toben to him informed on the attitudes in the village, and asks after a mysterious project called ‘K’ and ‘P’. Whatever the shady plan is, its being activated that night.

Lady LaCroix and Muskwa do not get along.  Their constant bickering and laying blame is making their task more difficult than it need be.  What is their task, you may ask?  To retrace the steps of Kaia and Codi, and likely bring them back to safety.  Muskwa struggles to remember the exact pattern needed to enter the Valley, and LaCroix wastes no time in blaming him for the children’s predicament.  The pair finally locates the first key to the Valley, and LaCroix performs a quick trick to see if the children had been there or not.  The answer is a positive one, but puzzling.  According to her magic, the children arrived at the statue from the sky.  Despite this strange development, Muskwa and LaCroix carry on, united in their concern for Kaia and Codi’s safety.

Murambi’s journal tells of his decision to leave Tiki Village in search of knowledge.  His defeat by Muskwa showed him that not only strength and speed were the keys to success.  Murambi’s adventure is similar to that of Kaia and Codi.  On his first night in the Valley of Secrets, he is ambushed by beings that resemble him exactly and just barely escapes with the help of Konoso.  Before long, he discovers the entrance to the Valley, and begins to explore the underground tunnels.  However, the caves are uninhabited, and he nearly loses himself before finding the Library.  Murambi is determined to learn more than Muskwa had, and believes he must leave Tiki Island to do so.  After unearthing a book that tells of ‘a place shrouded in eternal fog’, Murambi makes his decision to leave Tiki Island for this mysterious place, taking the source of his information with him…

After discovering the connection between the symbols and the paths in the Valley, Kaia, Codi and Copernicus have started searching nightly for the entrance. While flying over the Tiki Forest one night, Codi spots a faint glow on the hill below them. The threesome learns that this is in fact what they’re looking for. However, the totem they’ve found bears the second symbol in Muskwa’s journal. They set off to find the first symbol, and plan to push the switches in the right order. As they do so, the symbol paths light up, and finally a door opens into the ground. Copernicus declines their invitation to come along, and Kaia and Codi descend into the darkness of the underground.

Mr. Woo is descending into Pendleton’s laboratory, having been summoned by Pendleton to see his discoveries.  Unfortunately for the Tikians, the spirits that Woo’s robots collected are producing some interesting results.  Pendleton has a Salamangler encased in a glass globe, and tortures it to force it to produce light and energy.  Mr.  Woo is very pleased, and asks after Pendleton’s main project.  The response is positive, which certainly does not mean good things for Tiki Island…

Codi is hard at work, helping Tersi and her people in their quest to discover and document the mysteries of the underground tunnels.  Kaia is on a quest of her own, though hers is not nearly as exciting.  She is searching through the Library to find any clue to Woo’s mission, and has not been very successful.  Kaia is growing discouraged, when Raymew fusses over a particular book in the bottom row.  The Librarian does not recognize it, and announces the title to be ‘The Journal of Murambi’.

As the sun sets on Tiki Island, Kaia and Codi are high above the forest in the flying contraption of their rescuer.
